- The PVT manufacturer Sunmaxx has supplied more than 1,130 photovoltaic-thermal hybrid modules for the construction of the new Sports Arena of Vienna in the past months.
- The PVT area corresponds to approx. 2,260 m². The system is therefore currently the largest PVT system in Europe.
- A combination of PVT modules and geothermal energy enables a fully self-sufficient, climate-neutral, and cost-efficient heat supply for approximately 20,000 m² of building space.
- The Sports Arena of Vienna will soon be ceremonially opened. The project is built to the highest sustainability standards.
Dresden/Vienna, 17 June 2025: At the site of the former Ferry Dusika Indoor Stadium, a new sports facility is about to be inaugurated – a pioneering project in both energy and environmental terms. At the heart of the facility’s energy system are over 1,130 photovoltaic-thermal hybrid modules (PVT), supplied by the Saxony-based manufacturer Sunmaxx. Installation and planning of the system were carried out in collaboration with Sunmaxx’s partner companies Wagner Solar GmbH and Fortuna Solar eG.
The integrated energy concept of the new Sports Arena of Vienna meets the highest sustainability standards, combining PVT technology with geothermal systems and brine heat pumps. From the moment of commissioning, the building will be supplied with electricity and heat efficiently, climate-neutrally, and cost-effectively. System planning was undertaken by FIN – Future is Now Kuster Energielösungen GmbH.
Sunmaxx’s PVT hybrid technology combines photovoltaics and solar thermal energy into one highly efficient system. It enables largely self-sufficient, climate-neutral, and cost-effective energy supply for a wide range of applications – from private homes to industrial facilities with process heat needs, and even municipal district heating. With its proprietary heat exchanger technology, Sunmaxx’s PVT modules simultaneously generate electricity and heat at maximum efficiency and yield – using both solar radiation and ambient air as energy sources.
The successful implementation of this project marks a turning point: PVT has officially entered the realm of large-scale deployment. The Sports Arena of Vienna vividly demonstrates how the complete decarbonization of buildings can be achieved through the combination of PVT and geothermal energy – a significant milestone not only for the city of Vienna, but for Europe’s energy transition as a whole.
