New solar hybrid modules from Sunmaxx PVT reach 80% efficiency

Dresden, 21 March 2023 – According to independent measurements made by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany, the premium PX-1 module from Sunmaxx PVT can achieve an overall efficiency of 80%. The photovoltaic thermal (PVT) module is based on the latest PVT module technology and consists of 108 PERC half cells in an M10 format. The dimensions of the module are 1750 x 1140 mm and the electrical power is 400 watts, corresponding to an electrical efficiency of 20%.

The measurement by the Fraunhofer Institute determined a thermal output of 1200 watts, which corresponds to a thermal collector efficiency Eta0 of 60%. This value was measured under MPP conditions with full solar irradiation and 25 °C ambient and module temperature as well as a wind speed of 0 m/s. In combination with the electrical side, this results in an overall efficiency of 80%.

Additionally, various real operating scenarios were measured at outdoor and indoor test stations at Fraunhofer ISE. It was shown that the module heats up to a maximum temperature of 30°C under full irradiation. Common PV modules can reach temperatures of up to 80°C under such conditions, which leads to significant losses in electrical efficiency. This demonstrates the excellent efficiency of the heat exchanger used by Sunmaxx, which originates from the automotive industry. Sunmaxx PVT is the only company worldwide to offer this combination of automotive and PV technology.

With a pressure drop of just 29 mbar, the module also performs well above average in hydraulic measurements, which in turn enables low installation and operating costs.

Dr. Wilhelm Stein, CEO of Sunmaxx PVT, is very pleased with the measurement results: “These excellent results underscore the performance of our unique technology and successful development work with our partners. There are basically no obstacles to the PVT market ramp-up.”

The module can be used in both landscape and portrait orientation and is only about 3.5 kg/m² r heavier than a comparable PV module. In combination with heat pumps, it also enables efficient and cost-effective energy and heating while using only a small amount of space. The module is attached to the mounting system using standard photovoltaic clamps. Modules will be available for purchase in larger quantities when mass production begins at the end of the year. Reservations and pre-orders can already be placed with Sunmaxx PVT.
